What happened to the United Nations?

Good People, what happened to the United Nations? I mean I used to do a lot of work with this organization at the highest level, flying in helicopters, chartered planes, etc for important international assignments.

But over the last few years, things seemed to have changed. Simply, no one cares, and anything goes in this world: “the might is right” is the new mantra. It is very painful because if we weaken the UN, the world will become a more dangerous place.

That should not be the outcome as a “Fragile World Needs A More Influential United Nations” as I have written here.

Truth and facts are not absolute anymore. Everything now is based on relativism. You may blame me for thinking that it was actually based on order. The world has a few more years for a redesign as the operating order right now is broken.

In the Igbo Nation, men fight, dance and do whatever, but one day, it is expected that they will converge and drink together. In Ovim, that is the Nkwo day (in some communities, it could be Afo, Orie or Eke). During that drinking, the most elderly person asks the ancestors to bring peace, and allow kinsmen drink together, and reconcile. Magically, some of those “enemies” will forget their animosities, reducing tension in the land.

Then  as kinsmen gather for the yam festival, they ask everyone to eat the yam and vegetable from the same pot. How do you eat from the same pot with your enemy? Haha, you must dis-enemy that person before eating. Peace is consolidated.

Good People, as in ancestral Igbo which had mechanisms to bring people together and solve problems, the world needs the United Nations to deepen its influence, towards bringing peace to our fragile world.

1 THOUGHT ON What happened to the United Nations?

  1. Well, the UN seemed to have worked ‘better’ for the duration the US remained the absolute world’s superpower, but as the US leadership weakened, with the rise of China and a certain Russia that wants to be recognized as third centre of power, you are guaranteed tensions.

Those who think multipolar world will be more stable obviously don’t factor divergence of values, and the fact that no one relinquishes power while smiling.

For the US to regain some sense of supremacy and be the ultimate arbiter, the US will have to recognize the rise of China, with Putin’s Russia giving some sense of importance. It is not Iran, Israel or North Korea that run things or can shake things up, but once the ‘big’ three have some understanding and respect among themselves, the small guys will align.

Power has no other substitute, if you have it, you command attention and respect. It’s all politics and business, no emotions.
