Telecom Could Change Nigeria if Government Invests in Broadband – GSMA Independent Study

0

After examining the trends in Nigeria’s telecommunications practice and operations, the Global System for Mobile telephony Association (GSMA), has said that the country can scoop about N862 billion in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by the end of 2015, from technology alone if it plays according to the rules of the game.

The association’s Special Government Advisor, Ross Bateson in a media briefly stated ‘it is essential that the new Nigerian government acts quickly to support Mobile Broadband expansion, as failure to do so could hinder the country’s social and economic growth. Not only could the country realise as much as NGN862 billion of incremental GDP, but people of all ages and livelihoods would benefit from the vast amount of information and opportunities Mobile Broadband can unlock.”

He also noted that “mobile is the most cost-effective way of delivering broadband services in Nigeria. Nigeria already has advanced mobile networks, such as Glo’s recently launched LTE network, and has experienced significant take-up of HSPA Mobile Broadband. The laying of submarine data cables between Lagos and Europe has provided much of the international backhaul needed, but mobile is vital in providing last mile connectivity to consumers, especially in rural areas. However, without proper spectrum allocation in line with internationally harmonised band plans and broader government support, it will not be possible to realise the full potential of Mobile Broadband.”

Nigeria government despite all the efforts could not get Nigeria into the 100 out of 138 according to a recent document from the World Economic Forum that ranked the country 104 out of 138.

Developed by Google based on the Linux kernel and Java, it offers virtually limitless opportunities because of its open-source license. Embedded systems itself is a branch of microelectronics which has revolutionized the world of commerce and industry. This workshop will introduce participants to these core areas of modern technology.

The Android training is a hands-on Android course designed to provide essential skills and experience with developing applications on Android mobile platform. Throughout the course, participants will develop real-life applications, which can serve as basis for their future Android projects. Eclipse and Android SDK are used as the development environment throughout the class.

The embedded systems training is a hands-on embedded systems program designed to impact practical experiences on building with microprocessors and FPGA. Real-life examples on Microchip PIC, Parallax SX and FPGA chips will be taught.

Responding to her new appointment, she said: “It’s a very exciting time for me to join Google. At least, amongst other initiatives, it will afford Nigerian enterprises the advantage of growing and at the same time engage their customers online world, she said. “The internet is set to play a critical role in the country’s socio-economic development; Google is committed to investing in Nigeria and to making the internet accessible and relevant for all Nigerian users.”

World Economic Report Shows Nigeria Ranks 104th (of 138) in Global IT Usage

2

The World Economic Forum (WEF) has released its annual ranking of national IT adoption. Nigeria is still lagging in its use of information and communication technology. Nigeria finished 104 in the study’s comparison of 138 countries that make up 99 per cent of the World’s total gross domestic product. Mauritius and South Africa lead in the Sub-Saharan Africa region, having placed 47th and 61st respectively in the global ranking.

The report entitled “The Global Information Technology Report 2010-2011”, placed Sweden first followed by Singapore, Finland and Switzerland. The 411-page report, is based on readiness and adoption of technologies by governments, people, and businesses. It is also based on an index of 71 economic and social indicators, as diverse as new patents, mobile phone subscriptions, property rights, software piracy and availability of venture capital.

Nigeria was ranked low on many measures that affect economic competitiveness. For example it ranked 112th on infrastructure, especially in its human resources dimension, and ICT usage is still far below international best practices, especially for the business sector (81st) and the government (123). Nigeria also lagged behind on conducive market (94th) and political and regulatory environment (107th), compared to remarkable showings from Mauritius (26th and 33rd respectively) and South Africa (25th and 23rd respectively). Majority of countries in Africa lag in the bottom half of the Network Readiness Index (NRI) rankings, even though many countries have started to leverage more and more on ICT to improve efficiency and reach out more citizens.
