Let me congratulate my kinsman for his inclusion as one of the 60 Nigerians who have played major roles in our nation. Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu is a legend in Ovim, Abia state. Those days I was in the village, he came many times to the village primary and secondary schools with one message: “you must be educated”.
When I set our village secondary school’s all-time-best-academic record in WAEC, he invited me to his house, and congratulated me with gifts. The former governor of Lagos and Imo states, and one of the finest leaders in Nigeria, remains an inspiration. He would always call, “Ogbo o [namesake], brilliant work”.
With Major General Ike Nwachukwu, Lt General Azubuike Ihejirika, Navy Commodore Duruoha Ekekwe, Justice Johnson, Dr Ukpabi, Chif Umunna, Prof Ogbonna etc, they shaped and continue to shape our community. When Lt General Ihejirika visited my house this January after Christmas, I reminded him how his father made his parlor available for us to study mathematics many years ago. I treasure Ovim for the peace and progress we enjoy.
