Nigeria Orders Telcos (MTN, Airtel, Glo, etc) To Suspend Twitter

The Nigerian government has ordered telecommunication companies to suspend Twitter in Nigeria. The companies have complied: “ALTON  (Association of Licensed Telecommunication Operators of Nigeria) has also conducted a robust assessment of the request in accordance with internationally accepted principles. Based on national interest provisions in the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003, and within the licence terms under which the industry operates; our members have acted in compliance with the directives of NCC. We will continue to engage all relevant authorities and stakeholders and will act as may be further directed by the NCC.”

1 THOUGHT ON Nigeria Orders Telcos (MTN, Airtel, Glo, etc) To Suspend Twitter

  1. What our capricious and thin skinned rulers don’t understand is that by this single thoughtless act, they have closed offices and shops for thousands of people. In their small minds, social media is just a tool for throwing banter and settling political scores, they never thought that thousands have built businesses on social media, earning their incomes there. But because a certain Buhari didn’t like how a certain Dorsey acted, it’s enough to shutdown livelihoods for thousands who rely on that platform. The level of foolishness in this land knows no bounds.

Of course, we are not expecting telcos not to comply, since they operate with licenses issued by the Nigerian government, so the logical thing is to obey the directive. But it shouldn’t end there, the courts are there to test the legalities of executive actions, and it’s important to test these things to their limits.

The interesting thing in this world is that, no matter how ridiculous or absurd your actions are, you will always have supporters. When that of land borders closure happened, some cheered, but what they are yet to show us was how Nigeria became greater by doing that.

Now ordinary people will suffer a collateral damage, because of some people’s ego…
