Uber and Lyft Settle for $300M on Wage Theft

New York Court Blocks Uber, Lyft Drivers' Attempt to Raise Ride Fares - Tekedia

While everyone is complaining about prices in Africa, US authorities continue to milk broad tech companies. Uber and Lyft are paying $300 million to drivers over some nefarious activities. Of course, these fines will not touch Africa-based drivers.

Uber and Lyft have agreed to pay more than $300 million to settle allegations of wage theft, the New York Attorney General's office said Thursday. The ride-hailing companies were accused of withholding drivers' wages and not providing paid sick leave, which is required in the state. Uber will pay $290 million, and Lyft $38 million, to potentially more than 100,000 drivers. They'll also have to guarantee drivers outside of New York City are earning a minimum of $26 per hour. The companies have previously faced criticism and regulator pressures over how they manage their drivers. Uber's settlement totals more than 3% of its revenue from the last quarter; Lyft's is almost 4%.
