The Rise of AI-Generated Fake Reviews: How They’re Changing Online Shopping and What You Can Do

The Growing Threat of AI-Generated Fake Reviews in the Online Marketplace

The rise of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools has revolutionized many industries, but it has also introduced a new challenge: the proliferation of AI-generated fake reviews. These tools, which allow users to produce detailed and convincing text effortlessly, have created a new frontier of deception in e-commerce, hospitality, and service industries. Watchdog groups and researchers warn that consumers, merchants, and platforms now face uncharted territory in combating this growing issue.

The History of Fake Reviews

Fake reviews are not a new phenomenon. For years, platforms like Amazon and Yelp have struggled with fraudulent feedback, often orchestrated by brokers and businesses willing to pay for positive testimonials. These reviews are sometimes incentivized through gift cards or discounts, making it harder for consumers to discern genuine experiences.

The emergence of AI-powered text generators like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, however, has made it easier than ever for fraudsters to create fake reviews in large volumes and with convincing detail.

A Year-Round Problem, Worse During the Holidays

Fake reviews are a year-round issue, but their impact becomes especially pronounced during the holiday season. This period sees a surge in online shopping, with many consumers relying heavily on reviews to make informed purchasing decisions. The ability to produce fake reviews quickly and at scale during this critical time can significantly distort the marketplace.

Industries Affected

Fake reviews now plague a wide range of industries, including e-commerce, hospitality, home services, medical care, and even niche services like piano lessons.

According to The Transparency Company, a tech firm specializing in detecting fraudulent reviews, AI-generated fake reviews began appearing in significant numbers in mid-2023. In a recent report analyzing 73 million reviews across the home, legal, and medical sectors, nearly 14% were deemed likely fake, with 2.3 million confidently identified as AI-generated.

Maury Blackman, an advisor to The Transparency Company, noted that AI tools have become a “really, really good tool for review scammers,” enabling them to deceive consumers more effectively.

High-Tech Deception

The scale of the problem extends beyond written reviews. Software company DoubleVerify has observed a spike in AI-generated reviews used to promote apps on mobile phones and smart TVs. These deceptive reviews entice users to download potentially harmful applications, which may hijack devices or bombard users with ads.

In September, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) filed a lawsuit against Rytr, an AI content generator accused of enabling fraudulent reviews. Some users of the tool allegedly created thousands of reviews for businesses selling garage door repairs, counterfeit designer handbags, and other products.

The Challenge of Detection

Detecting fake reviews, especially those generated by AI remains a significant challenge. Tools like Pangram Labs’ AI detection software have identified AI-generated reviews in prominent marketplaces like Amazon, where detailed and polished feedback often rises to the top of search results.

On platforms like Yelp, AI-generated reviews are sometimes posted by users attempting to earn the coveted “Elite” badge, which signals trustworthiness. Fraudsters use this badge to make their profiles appear more authentic, gaining access to exclusive events and bolstering their ability to deceive.

While some consumers use AI tools genuinely to enhance their reviews, the line between authentic and fraudulent content becomes increasingly blurred.

What Companies Are Doing

Major platforms are implementing policies to address the rise of AI-generated reviews. Companies like Amazon and Trustpilot allow users to post AI-assisted reviews if they reflect genuine experiences. Yelp has taken a stricter stance, requiring reviewers to write their content manually.

The Coalition for Trusted Reviews, which includes companies like Amazon, Tripadvisor, and Booking.com, aims to combat review fraud by sharing best practices and developing advanced detection systems. The group views AI as a double-edged sword, presenting both challenges and opportunities to protect consumers.

The FTC’s recent ban on the sale or purchase of fake reviews allows the agency to fine individuals and businesses involved in the practice. However, tech platforms hosting these reviews remain shielded from penalties under U.S. law.

Can Consumers Spot Fake Reviews?

Spotting fake reviews is challenging, particularly with the sophistication of AI tools. Researchers advise consumers to look out for overly enthusiastic or negative reviews, repetitive jargon, and cliches like “game-changer” or “the first thing that struck me.” AI-generated reviews also tend to be longer and overly structured, often using generic phrases to fill space.

A study by Yale University professor Balazs Kovacs found that people struggle to differentiate between AI-generated and human-written reviews. Even AI detection tools can be fooled by shorter texts, which are common in review formats.

The Way Forward

The rapid adoption of generative AI has highlighted the need for stronger safeguards to maintain the integrity of online reviews. While companies and watchdog groups are stepping up their efforts, the scale of the problem requires continued innovation in detection technologies and stricter enforcement of anti-fraud measures.

As consumers, staying vigilant and critical when reading online reviews is essential. By understanding the tactics employed by fraudsters, shoppers can make more informed decisions and avoid falling victim to deceptive practices.

The fight against fake reviews is far from over, but with collective action and technological advancements, the integrity of the digital marketplace can be preserved.
