The Nigeria's Planned Nuclear Power Plant

The Nigerian Government is soliciting bids for the construction of a 4000 MW nuclear power plant. Dr Yau Idris, Director General, Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) disclosed this during the 2022 Nigerian International Energy Summit in Abuja.

People, I do not know what to write. But it is very important we make sure we can handle this. The DG felt this concern when he noted: “There are mechanisms put in place that ensure any country can build a nuclear power plant. Nigeria is trying to deliver 4,000MW of electricity through nuclear power. We are trying to construct four units and we are at the bidding stage”.

This is my main concern: strikes, strikes and strikes. If that happens, are we safe? Yes, if labour unions begin strikes and allow reactors to go out of order, bad things could happen. Nigeria needs to seriously reevaluate this energy source, considering the volatility in the land.
