The Google's $20 Billion Flank Which May Not Be Enough

Tim Cook Says Apple is Watching ChatGPT Closely

Google has to fight a real battle ahead because Apple is watching ChatGPT: 'Apple CEO Tim Cook has revealed that he is a fan of ChatGPT, the high-flying OpenAI chatbot known for its impressive ability in handling various tasks. In an interview with ABC’s “Good Morning America”, Cook, who disclosed recently that he uses ChatGPT and is excited about the tool's unique applications, said that Apple is watching the AI tool closely.'

Google pays close to $20 billion yearly for Apple to have Google Search as the default search engine in its browser and products. You may ask: why should Google ship that amount of money when Apple would have used it since it has remained the best search engine for years? Google is simply closing the flanks as in military strategy: any search engine which picks that position will get better over time, and the only way to stop that is to nip it by buying out Apple’s digital landscape.

Pure and simple, Google is happy contributing a double digit component of Apple profit in this way. But with ChatGPT evolving and improving Bing, would Apple be tempted to offer unconstrained choices to users?
