The heir to the throne made the comments on a visit to the Blue Light Hub in Milton Keynes yesterday, where he spoke about the significance of supporting the mental wellbeing of our emergency responders as part of his efforts to mark World Mental Health Day.

William added that he did not appreciate the "cliff fall" of stepping down until it actually happened.

He said: "Life catches up with you' after you have left. That can feel quite lonely and isolating. At the time I didn't notice it happen. Afterwards, you realise it's not normal. I do worry about people retiring. We have to be better at managing long-term health."

During his visit, William spoke to young Blue Light mental health champions and volunteers and talking about the challenges they face over their mental wellbeing during the early stages of their careers.

The prince - who is joined by broadcaster, journalist and psychologist Dr Sian Williams - said that in order to build resilience and protect their mental health, emergency workers need to be equipped with the right skills for it.

The Blue Light Hub is the operational base of South Central Ambulance Service, Thames Valley Police and Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service and is one of the first purpose-built combined fire, police and ambulance premises in the country.

Yesterday, The Prince and Princess of Wales were in Birmingham where they hosted a youth forum to mark World Mental Health Day.

The event, named "Exploring our Emotional Worlds", focused on how understanding our own emotions and building positive relationships can serve as a solid foundation of our mental well-being.

In a candid and rare revelation, Prince William has shared the difficulties he encountered after deciding to step away from his career as a pilot. The Duke of Cambridge, known for his dedication to various charitable causes and his role within the British royal family, spoke about the transition he faced after leaving his role as an air ambulance pilot in 2017.

Prince William, who had served as a search and rescue pilot before becoming a helicopter ambulance pilot, expressed his passion for the job and the deep satisfaction he derived from saving lives. However, the responsibilities of royal duties and his desire to devote more time to his family ultimately led him to leave his pilot career behind.

The transition from a fulfilling career to royal duties wasn't without its challenges. Prince William revealed that he faced a sense of "loss" and missed the camaraderie and sense of purpose that came with being a pilot. He also noted that transitioning to a new role, one where he represented the monarchy and engaged in numerous official duties, required significant adjustment.

Furthermore, Prince William emphasised the importance of mental health and encouraged open discussions about personal struggles.

He acknowledged that many people face similar challenges when transitioning between careers and urged others to seek support and not bottle up their feelings.

His candid revelations serve as a reminder that even those in the highest positions can experience the difficulties of major life changes. Prince William's openness about his personal journey adds a human touch to his public persona and reinforces the importance of mental health awareness in today's society.
