Nigeria's SEC Needs Cyber Unit

Nigeria's Securities and Exchange Communication (SEC) needs to create a cyber unit as the world of commerce and money moves online. And when it does, it needs to hire people with skills and capabilities to run the unit.

Over the last few weeks, we have seen things in the Nigerian business-sphere that SEC cannot just ignore. From Bitcoin exchanges to local cryptocurrency to initial coin offerings; they are emerging. Yes, all these are happening in Nigeria.

The SEC cannot pretend that it is not aware.  They could learn from the U.S. SEC which has created a Cyber Unit.

It is time and the SEC needs to make it happen.

 

SEC: the regulators' regulator that oftentimes struggles to regulate itself. Its office complex is big enough to house all its cyber-related needs. The Commission has remained traditional for too long, let the corporate governance hangover be dealt with first; at the moment, something is not working well there.
