'Naked Gun' Reboot Trailer Drops: Liam Neeson, O.J. Simpson Joke, and Franchise Legacy
Quote from Oladosun Joshua Segun on April 4, 2025, 9:37 AM
The 'Naked Gun' is back! But this time, Liam Neeson is in charge. The first trailer just dropped, and it's got everyone talking. Mostly because of one eyebrow-raising joke. Guess who's the butt of it? O.J. Simpson as Nordberg. Yes, the same guy who was in the original movies. Talk about awkward! The trailer mixes nostalgia with new-school humor, and the results are surprising.
The 'Naked Gun' movies? Those were comedy gold. Leslie Nielsen's deadpan delivery and the slapstick jokes made them huge. Can this reboot live up to the legacy? The O.J. joke shows they're taking risks, but will it pay off?
The 'Naked Gun' reboot walks a tightrope. It's gotta honor what made the originals great. And it needs to bring something new to the table. That O.J. Simpson joke in the trailer? It's a sign of how much it's trying to shake things up.
Liam Neeson as Frank Drebin Jr? It's unexpected, right?
Neeson usually kicks butt in action movies. "Taken," anyone? But can he be funny? He's done comedy before, like in "Life's Too Short". Can he bring the laughs needed to succeed? This role is different. Can he pull it off?
Some fans are hyped about Neeson. Others? Not so much. Can he fill Leslie Nielsen's shoes? Some worry he's too serious. Others think he'll bring a fresh take. The expectations are high, no doubt.
The cast also includes the likes of "Cody Rhodes, Liza Kozhy, CCH Pounder, Busta Rhymes, Paul Walter Hauser, Kevin Durand, and Danny Huston, Pamela Anderson."
The footage sees a bank robbery in progress when a little girl walks in on the dangerous heist. Unbeknownst to these would-be crooks, this is none-other than Frank Drebin Jr. in disguise, and he quickly takes the criminals down with a deadly lolipop. The teaser ends with Drebin paying tribute to his father, Frank Drebin (Leslie Nielsen), confirming this will indeed be a continuation of the original Naked Gun trilogy. There is even a downright diabolical joke involving O.J. Simpson's character Nordberg that will have fans rolling.
Social media blew up after the trailer. Some thought the joke was hilarious. Others called it tasteless and offensive. Some say it's wrong to joke about something so serious. Others think comedy should have no limits.
Comedy can be risky. Where's the line between funny and offensive? O.J. Simpson was in the original movies. Does that make the joke okay? Some say yes, some say no. It's a tricky situation.
The original 'Naked Gun' movies were something special. Can this reboot capture the magic?
Slapstick, puns, and Leslie Nielsen's deadpan face. That's what made 'Naked Gun' great. The writing was sharp, the characters were lovable. It was silly, but in the best way.
Reboots are tough. You need to please old fans and get new ones. Modern audiences have different tastes. Can the reboot walk this line? Can it be funny for everyone?
Leslie Nielsen is Frank Drebin. Neeson has big shoes to fill. Nielsen's deadpan delivery was perfect. Can Neeson bring that same magic? It's a huge challenge.
"Well, obviously, the script has got to be funny and have a kind of a theme, a kind of a story, albeit quite loose, going through the script rather than just a series of gags, which can get boring very, very quickly. Yes, I'm honored to be offered the part of Frank Drebin, and a little bit nervous about it because I've done a couple of skits before that were just very short TV things, but this would be, I don't know, 95, 100 minutes of a film. They're still casting it so hopefully my other cast members will be funny and sexy so that I could just be dead absolutely straight. There has to be lots of visual gags going on, too."
Speaking in an interview last year, Neeson admitted to having nerves over taking the role and noted that the film would need to have lots of visual gags. He also hoped, at the time, that he would be surrounded by comedy actors to allow him to do the straight man schtick.
The trailer has nods to the original movies. Did you see the beaver? A classic reference! Keep your eyes peeled, there's more to find.
The reboot looks modern. The jokes? They are still silly. The tone seems similar to the originals, but with a 2024 twist.
The key is balance. The reboot needs to honor the original movies. And it needs to be funny for today's audiences. Can it do both?
If this reboot hits, expect more movies. Maybe even a TV series? The 'Naked Gun' universe could expand. The reboot is set to release July 18, 2025. We'll see then if it can live up to the hype.
Liam Neeson is the new Detective Frank Drebin Jr. The trailer dropped, and it's got an O.J. Simpson joke that's got everyone talking and anticipating. Rebooting a classic is tough, but the 'Naked Gun' still has potential. What do you think about the trailer? Are you excited? Worried? Sound off in the comments! The 'Naked Gun' can still make audiences laugh.
