Manchester United 1-1 Chelsea United claim satisfactory draw against rivals Chelsea
Quote from Segun Ite on November 28, 2021, 8:36 PMIn what was undisputably and inarguably the headlines of the weekend in the world of football, Carrick and the team that has suffered so many setbacks this season were able to get away with a point at the European Champions' fortress, Stamford Bridge.
In the wake of a change in management of the Red outfit, Michael Carrick had been appointed to take charge of a few games as the club awaited a new manager, who turned out to be Ralf Ragnick
United began the post-Ole era with a 2-0 win over Villarreal in the UCL midweek, courtesy of goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho, the second goal being the latter's first goal for the club. Chelsea on the other hand who have been close to a hundred percent all season, put on a master class as they got four unreplied goals past their first-leg Italian nemesis, Juventus.
As it stood, the tide was heavily tilted in The Blues' favour to come out victorious in such a prestigious clash.
The game began and as usual Chelsea got to business. With just three minutes gone, Odoi had a one-on-one chance against DeGea which he tried to round past him but the Spanish Goalie's leg got in the way. The Blues kept on attacking as a wonderful opportunity came in the 23rd minute. James(on the right flank) tried to connect with Alonso at the flank, but the latter was too slow and unable to control. The Blues once again came close to an opener in the 31st minute when Rudiger swept a wonderful shot from about 26 yards out at the goal which hit both the tip of DeGea's fingers and the crossbar. In the 36th minute, Odoi tried to weave through the defence but his shot was easily saved by DeGea. Shortly before the close of the first half, United had DeGea to thank again as the goalie was alert to stop Rudiger's goalbound header from James's free kick.
In the second half, very much against the run of play, Carrick's men took the lead after Jorginho failed to keep under control, the ball that had been heavily launched out by United in a counter-attacking attempt. Sancho who happened to be at the right place at the right time capitalized on Jorginho's error, running at the Chelsea goal and finishing in style past Edouard Mendy.
It was Aaron Wan Bissaka's turn to take the blame in the 64th minute as the wingback conceded a penalty after kicking Thiago Silva's ankle in the 18 yard box. It was perfect retribution for Jorginho as the Italian confidently slotted it in his usual manner past DeGea, redeeming himself for the goal caused on the other end.
Both teams tried to find winners, however, all efforts were not productive as they were tied 1-1 at the end of the referee's final whistle
