Lessons for Nigeria from ChinaTech

Reading this piece makes me believe that any nation can change its perception. For years, we have seen China from the lens of copycats devoid of any innovation. But no one can say that today when you see what Tencent is doing in WeChat and the bravado of Alibaba: simply, China innovates.

Over the years, Chinese entrepreneurs have gained a reputation of simply being copycats of American technology. That image is beginning to fade. In fact, Shen says the opposite is happening.

“Yes, a lot of U.S. companies still think China is about copycats, which is a totally, totally wrong perception,” he said. “I would suggest that U.S. companies should actually try to learn from China.”

For all the mess the Yahoo Boys have caused in the Nigerian web ecosystems, we can fix that. All we need to do is to provide a new narrative backed by practical demonstrations that the past had gone, and the new future is now.

China Tech has evolved and we can learn from it. No perception is cast on stone. Nigeria's image on the web can be remade.
