ChatGPT's Media House Challenge

Spoke With New York Times On Tech Talent in Africa - Tekedia

ChatGPT may have to solve a major legal challenge as New York Times goes after the parent company, OpenAI, to avoid the use of its contents for training AI systems.

The New York Times is reportedly mulling legal action against OpenAI in order to safeguard its reporting-related intellectual property rights, anonymous sources tell NPR. The development comes days after The Times updated its terms and conditions for all of its products — including NYTimes.com and its mobile apps — to prevent its content from being used for "any software program, including, but not limited to, training a machine learning or artificial intelligence (AI) system." OpenAI and The Times have been trying to iron out a licensing deal for weeks, per NPR, but talks have reportedly gotten "contentious."

A lawsuit by The New York Times would be the highest-profile battle yet with OpenAI over IP, and it would be closely followed by other media outlets.
