Ayra Starr shares how Don Jazzy added the "Starr" to her stage name

You may know Ayra Starr from her hit songs like "Rush", "Away", "Bloody Samaritan", "Sability" and "Beggie Beggie", which showcase her unique blend of Afro-Pop, R&B and Soul. But did you know that her original name was Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe? That's right, the talented singer-songwriter was born with a different name but changed it when she signed with Mavin Records in 2021.

According to Ayra Starr, she wanted to be called "Ira" in Yoruba, but she wanted people to pronounce the name as "Ayra", so she decided to google the word "Ayra", and she instantly fell in love with the meaning.

In a recent interview, Ayra Starr explained how Don Jazzy came up with her new name Starr. She said that when she met him for the first time, he asked her what her name was, and she told him Oyinkansola. He then asked her if she had a stage name and she said mentioned "Ira" which she converted to "Ayra" after research. He then said that he liked her name, but he wanted to add something to it. He said that he wanted to make her a star, so he suggested Ayra Starr, the Mavin Records founder Don Jazzy who according to Ayra, wanted everyone to know she's a star.

Ayra Starr said that she loved the name instantly and agreed to use it. She said that she felt like it suited her personality and her music. She also said that she was grateful to Don Jazzy for believing in her and giving her a platform to shine. She said that he is like a father figure to her and that he always supported and guided her.

Ayra Starr also talked about her debut album, 19 & Dangerous, which was released on 6th August 2021. She said that the album was a reflection of her growth as an artist and as a woman. She said that she wanted to express herself freely and honestly, without fear or judgment. She said that the album was inspired by her own experiences and emotions, as well as by the stories of other women around her.

She said that the album was a celebration of womanhood, empowerment and self-love. She said that she hoped that her fans would relate to her songs and feel inspired by them. She also said that she was proud of the positive feedback and recognition that the album received, both locally and internationally.
