As Falcon Rocket Touches the face of Heaven, Taiwan Bleeds Fire
Quote from Ndubuisi Ekekwe on February 7, 2018, 10:05 AMThe world is innovating. We are making progress. But in some areas, we just seem to lag. This photo shows that besides the Like buttons, disappearing photos and smiley faces, we need to build systems for the real world, at scale. Yes, we must go beyond the ephemeral elements.
We need to change the REAL world for better, from hunger to detecting earthquakes. I agree, contextually, with Peter Thiel, an investor, where he notes that the world has expected a flying car, but ended up with 140 characters. Simply, that earthquakes could happen so often, from California to Taiwan, and continue to consume many people despite all the heralded advancements in sensor technologies, is mind-blowing. One happened in Taiwan few hours ago, and took away some citizens of the earth.
“The search for the missing is on after a powerful earthquake rocked Taiwan. The magnitude-6.4 quake killed at least seven people and injured more than 250. Dozens are missing, and there may be 40 people trapped in a large building that's titling perilously in the city of Hualien. As aftershocks continue to rumble, some Hualien residents are taking refuge in a stadium. The quake struck in the East China Sea just off the coast. Taiwan is on the Pacific Ring of Fire, which runs around the edge of the Pacific Ocean and is known for massive seismic and volcanic activity.” CNN
Progress is made. There is no doubt there. SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket left the bounds of earth and touched the face of heaven, successfully. That indeed is progress, and a big one: “Falcon Heavy rocket, the world's most powerful, blasted off without a hitch, putting Musk's cherry red Tesla roadster in orbit around the sun, with a dummy driver and a David Bowie song along for the ride.” Yes, we need to have more REAL world applications.

Quote from Francis Oguaju on February 7, 2018, 11:41 AMOne good news up, and three depressing ones; on the balance: man is still suffering.
Progress is being made in certain quarters, but while we love our clicks and slick devices, diseases and hunger are also creating havoc in some corners of the earth.
We need a balance, that's the only way we can feel 'perfection' in an imperfect world.
