An Overview of Sustainability Issues In Nigeria

Meeting the Sustainable Development Goals through Higher Education - Tekedia

Introduction

‘Global sustainability is the practice of meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.’ - hdrinc.com

'The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries - developed and developing - in a global partnership. They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.'- https://sdgs.un.org/2030agenda

The importance of global sustainability cannot be overstated, especially in a country like Nigeria that faces numerous socio-economic and environmental challenges.

Sustainability issues and possible solutions

In terms of environmental sustainability, Nigeria faces significant issues such as deforestation, desertification, water scarcity, pollution, and climate change. The country has experienced extensive deforestation due to irresponsible logging practices, leading to loss of biodiversity and increased carbon emissions. According to PWC – 2021 Nigeria Sustainability Outlook  ‘In the coming years, pollution control will remain a challenge for the government unless progressive policies and initiatives such as investment in alternative energy sources, inspection of exhaust emissions for automobiles, stringent enforcement of environmental regulations and pollution abatement systems are implemented.’

Social sustainability is another important aspect that requires attention in Nigeria. The country faces challenges related to poverty, inequality, education, healthcare, and gender equality. Promoting social inclusivity is essential to achieve sustainable development. The Nigerian government can invest in social infrastructure to improve education and healthcare services, particularly in underserved areas. Additionally, implementing programs that support women's empowerment and gender equality can foster social cohesion and reduce gender disparities. By focusing on social sustainability, Nigeria can ensure that all its citizens have equal opportunities and a decent standard of living.

Economic sustainability is also critical for Nigeria's development. Economic diversification is crucial to reduce the dependency on oil and promote long-term sustainable growth. Encouraging entrepreneurship and supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can foster economic diversification. The government should invest in infrastructure development, provide incentives for innovation and technological advancements, and promote sustainable agriculture to boost the non-oil sector. By diversifying the economy, Nigeria can create more job opportunities, reduce poverty, and achieve sustainable economic growth.

Conclusion

In conclusion, by aligning with the United Nations Sustainability Goals, Nigeria can identify key areas that need attention. Environmental sustainability requires measures to combat deforestation, desertification, pollution, and climate change. Social sustainability calls for efforts to reduce poverty, inequality, and promote education and healthcare access. Economic sustainability necessitates diversification and support for SMEs. Focusing on these areas will enhance Nigeria's resilience, promote a better quality of life for its citizens, and contribute to global sustainability efforts.
