Africa's mermaid tale is unveiled in 'Mami Wata' trailer

The first trailer for 'Mami Wata', a new film by Nigerian director Niyi Akinmolayan, has been released online. The film, which is set to premiere in cinemas across Africa in December, tells the story of a young girl who discovers that she is a descendant of the mythical mermaid-like creatures known as Mami Wata.

The trailer shows the girl, played by newcomer Adesua Etomi-Wellington, as she struggles to cope with her newfound identity and the dangers that come with it. She is pursued by a ruthless businessman, played by veteran actor Olu Jacobs, who wants to exploit her powers for his own gain. She also finds an unlikely ally in a journalist, played by Banky Wellington, who helps her uncover the secrets of her heritage and the history of the Mami Wata.

The film is based on the popular folklore and legends of the Mami Wata, which are widely spread across West and Central Africa. The Mami Wata are believed to be water spirits that can take the form of humans or animals, and are often associated with beauty, wealth, and fertility. They are also feared for their ability to cause misfortune or death to those who offend them.

According to Akinmolayan, the film is a passion project that he has been working on for over five years. He said that he wanted to create a film that celebrates African culture and showcases the diversity and richness of its stories. He also said that he hopes that the film will inspire young Africans to embrace their identity and heritage.

'Mami Wata' is produced by Inkblot Productions and FilmOne Entertainment, two of Nigeria's leading film production companies. The film features a cast of talented actors from Nigeria and other African countries, as well as stunning visual effects and cinematography. The film is expected to be one of the biggest hits of the year in Africa and beyond.
