Uncle Sam wants to see more innovation in middle America. The Commerce Department is inviting companies, higher education institutions and other groups to apply for the Regional Technology and Innovation Hub program, which aims to spur tech advances — and create highly paying jobs — beyond Silicon Valley and other traditional tech hot spots. The program will distribute $10 billion over the next four years, including $500 million in 2023, to newly designated Tech Hubs. Key areas of research for possible hubs include cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, robotics and biotechnology.
