It seems the next-generation iPhone could feature Apple’s own mapping technology instead of Google Maps software, if a recent unconfirmed report is correct.

Following the acquisition of several mapping companies, it’s possible that Apple intends to install its own mapping technology in iOS 6, which the iPhone 5 will sport. So we could see an iOS Maps app instead of Google Maps which the iPhone 4S has.

According to “trusted sources” of 9to5Mac, a new Maps app will feature in iOS 6 – and will boast some innovative capabilities including a 3D mode.

Apple acquired C3 Technologies last year, which means it could use the “declassified missile targeting methods to create detailed 3D maps that the company once described as ‘Google Earth on steroids’”, Macworld explained. The new Apple Maps app could have the ability to capture street-level imagery too as well as rotate the camera’s angle of view – and could compete with Google’s Street View, plus Google Maps.

Overall, the new mapping feature of iOS 6 is said to provide a “cleaner, faster and more reliable experience”, according to 9to5Mac.
