They are looking for a new roadmap and asking citizens to submit ideas to help create a better educational system in Nigeria. Since we saw the ad today, we think it is still open though we noticed that the last date in the official website was April 24, 2011

AN ADDRESS BY HIS EXCELLENCY, THE PRESIDENT OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA, DR. GOODLUCK EBELE JONATHAN, GCFR, AT THE INAUGURATION OF THE PRESIDENTIAL TASK TEAM ON EDUCATION, TUESDAY 4TH JANUARY, 2011 AT THE

Protocol

  • It gives me great pleasure to be present at this auspicious occasion of the inauguration of the Presidential Task Team on Education. The membership of this Team has been selected based on high integrity, competence and experience. You are therefore expected to handle this special assignment with total commitment. We equally expect your work to be of highest quality that should stand the test of time.

  • Education is the heart of national development and the source of quality human capital development that will propel Nigeria to be among the top 20 economies in the world; and also adequately meet its global commitment with respect to the attainment of Education for All (EFA) and Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The internationally accepted standard stipulates that any country aspiring to develop should invest over 25% of its national budget on education and research. Today our national education sector is in crisis due to numerous and daunting challenges which call for urgent attention.

  • This is the reason we convened the Presidential Stakeholders’ Summit on Education in October, 2010, to address these problems. You will recall Ladies and Gentlemen, that in my lead presentation during the summit, I focused on the falling education systems, identified some of the causes and challenged the participants to proffer solutions in a pragmatic and clearly implementable manner, while giving assurance of the highest political commitment and support. Thus, the summit was held to achieve our collective dreams and visions for tomorrow through restoration, reclamations and sustenance of Quality and Ethics in Education
  • Some recommendations made on these issues range from policy, institutional arrangement and governance, funding arrangement and resources mobilization, legal frame work, ethics and values system, physical infrastructure and institutional facilities, teacher quality and content effect of sectional sentiment over quality, the role of the community and NGOs as well as sustainability. It was also agree that Education should hence forth occupy its central position in the National Development Agenda.

In order to implement these recommendations therefore, the summit agreed that a Presidential Task Team should be constituted. Hence we are gathered here today.

Ladies and gentlemen, I hereby inaugurate the Presidential Task Team on Education.

Thank you for your attention.
